Paper accepted in Bioengineering Journal
Paper accepted in Bioengineering Journal

We are happy to announce that our paper “A Longitudinal Model for a Dynamic Risk Score to Predict Delayed Cerebral Ischemia after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage” has been accepted for publication in the Bioengineering Journal. Delayed Cerebral Ischemia (DCI) is a common and severe complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage, and its early detection is crucial to prevent serious neurological deficits. However, the onset of DCI is missed frequently due to its multi-factorial pathophysiology and a dynamic change of contributing factors.

The ratio of pulse-oximetric peripheral oxygen saturation to fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2/FiO2) has been proposed as additional hypoxemia criterion in a new global definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This study aims to evaluate the clinical and theoretical limitations of the SpO2/FiO2-ratio when using it to classify patients with ARDS and to follow disease progression.

Accurate longitudinal risk prediction for DCI (delayed cerebral ischemia) occurrence after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is essential for clinicians to administer appropriate and timely diagnostics, thereby improving treatment planning and outcome. This study aimed to develop an improved longitudinal DCI prediction model and evaluate its performance in predicting DCI between day 4 and 14 after aneurysm rupture.

In the example of intensive care units (ICUs), we compare data scientists’ and clinicians’ assessments of the optimal utilization of human and AI capabilities by determining suitable levels of human-AI teaming for safely and meaningfully augmenting or automating 6 core tasks. The goal is to provide actionable recommendations for policy makers and health care practitioners regarding AI design and implementation.

This paper presents the findings of a longitudinal multi-method study involving 112 developers and clinicians co-designing an XAI solution for a clinical decision support system. Our study identifies three key differences between developer and clinician mental models of XAI, including opposing goals (model interpretability vs. clinical plausibility), different sources of truth (data vs. patient), and the role of exploring new vs. exploiting old knowledge

Una presenting the issues with regards to ARDS classification when using SpO2/FiO2-ratio in comparison to PaO2/FiO2-ratio. Rolf showcasing the implications of using SpO2/FiO2-ratio at a hypothetical patient case.

Opening for student project "Interventional ML for respiratory failure prediction and prevention"

We are looking for Switzerland based computer science/data science/biomedical engineering/bioinformatics master student looking to apply their skills to real-world healthcare data and work on predictive modeling and interventional ML using data from the Neuro ICU! We are open for this to be a master thesis, master project, or internship, but unfortunately it is not a paid position. Duration and starting dates are flexible. More information is here. For application, please send your CV, transcript of records and short motivation letter to una.pale[at]usz.ch. Please do not hesitate to get in contact by email if you have any questions.

Paper on the limitations of SpO2/FiO2-Ratio accepted for publication in Critical Care!

We are delighted to announce that our paper “Limitations of SpO2/FiO2 - Ratio for Classification and Monitoring of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: an observational cohort study” was accepted for publication in the Critical Care journal. Congratulations to the whole team!

Several abstracts accepted for presentation at the Life Science Zurich Impact Conference 2025!

We are happy to announce that multiple abstracts of our research group have been accepted for presentation at the Life Science Zurich Impact «Precision Medicine and AI Innovations» on 26th May 2025. Th event is a one-day multi-track meeting that provides a platform for scientists from academia and industry to present their projects to potential collaborators and investors thus stimulating a dialogue between research, healthcare and economy with a focus on translational medicine. Our group will present results about our IT infrastructure and some of our current research projects. We are looking forward to the event and meeting potential collaborators for future research projects in the area of AI-enabled predictive modeling for intensive care!

ANIM 2025 Poster Award for the silent validation of our DCI risk prediction model! 🏆

At this year’s Arbeitstagung Neurointensivmedizin (ANIM) in Berlin, Jan presented the preliminary results of the silent validation of our DCI risk prediction model. The poster received the Research Poster Award which is endowed with a prize of €1,000. Congratulations to Jan, Jenny, and the whole team for this great achievement! 🏆

2024

Prof. Dr. Emanuela Keller elected as member of SNSF Research Council

Kick-off Innosuisse Project VentAI

We officially started our project VentAI, funded by Innosuisse (Swiss Innovation Agency). The project aims to develop novel AI-supported ventilation system for patients with respiratory insufficiency. The project is a collaboration between the University Hospital Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the Hamilton Medical AG. We are looking forward to the exciting challenges ahead!
